Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be available on 29th July for new laptops, PCs and tablets. Apart from this, it will also be available as a free upgrade for a year for any devices currently running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

If you are currently running Windows 7 or Windows 8.x, it’s time for you to prepare your system to make sure that, you receive it immediately when the new OS is available.

July 29 is the date when Windows 10 will be available. If you have Windows 7 or 8.1, you will be entitled to upgrade to the latest operating system by default for free. There are few things that you can do right now to ensure that you get the Windows 10 immediately once it is available.

How to reserve your free copy of Windows 10?

Starting 1st June 2015, users of PCs and tablets have already started noticing a Windows 10 upgrade notification icon in the system tray, on all the qualifying devices. This is because, a KB3035583 has been installed in your system and is prepared to receive Windows 10. KB3035583 was an optional update released by Microsoft in April. Now the giant company marked it as recommended update and you will see it installed automatically if you are running the qualifying operating system.

In case you didn’t receive the update, you can force a manual installation of the same by downloading and installing KB3035583 in your device and reserve your copy of Windows 10.

If you are currently running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you will automatically see a notification pop up in the lower-right corner of your screen (as shown in the below screenshot). Click on "reserve your free upgrade" in the “Get Windows 10” app and enter an email address if you want to be informed whether the reservation has been successful.

Before the day comes, your system will be ready with the update and when the upgrade is ready on 29th July, you will receive a notification to allow you to schedule the installation or do it right way. It will not take more time for you to install the upgrade as your system is already ready with the installation files.

How to remove the “Get Windows 10” app?

If you decide to uninstall the “Get Windows 10” app and keep away of Windows 10 upgrade for the time being, you can easily do so. Just go to Control Panel –>Programs and Features –>Installed Updates. Search for the update “KB3035583” and uninstall it. That’s all. You will not receive the Windows 10 notification.

Is it free for life?

Please note that, you will receive this free upgrade to Windows 10 for a limited time (till one year after the launch, i.e. till 29th July 2016) if you are already using the prior version of Windows (i.e. Windows 7 or Windows 8.1). After the elapsed time, if you want to upgrade to Windows 10, you will have to pay the full price. So, don’t wait. Reserve your upgrade now and get it for free.
