Last year in June, Microsoft started working on the Pylance language server and announced that it will add the ability to supercharge your Python IntelliSense experience with rich type information, helping you write better code faster. Since then, it was in an early preview state.

Now, Microsoft has officially announced that Pylance will be the default language server for Python in Visual Studio Code. This means it will now add fast and feature-rich Python language support for the developers in VS Code.

Pylance is now default language server for Python in Visual Studio Code

Microsoft announces the launch of Pylance to add fast and feature-rich language support for Python in Visual Studio Code. Pylance is also now included in the Python core extension’s bundle as an optional dependency. That means, Microsoft will automatically install it for you, but you have the option to use another language server of your choice.

Since the initial preview release, Microsoft continued to improve the performance and experience of several key features of Pylance and added new features to it. Microsoft is recommending all Visual Studio Code users to try the Pylance language server for a faster experience.

Since Pylance’s public preview, we’ve received both praise and constructive feedback from the community which we have used to guide our work over the last eleven months, Microsoft said in the official announcement.

To boost the performance, the Pylance extension (powered by Microsoft's static type checking tool, Pyright) works alongside the Python extensions in Visual Studio Code.
